About

More than likely, everything you ever thought you knew about capital punishment in this country is wrong. That’s not to say I blame you. I, myself, used to be in the same boat until about a year ago. Life has a funny way of changing things like that, though.

I haven’t always been sure of my beliefs regarding capital punishment. For years, the idea of killing a person in the name of our government as punishment for killing just didn’t sit right with me. Seven years ago, though, that changed. A friend of mine, someone I was very close to at one time in my life, was murdered. That loss changed me in a lot of ways including causing a lot of anger and rage at the senselessness of his early death. He never even had the chance to take a legal drink. I lost control of that rage initially believing those responsible for my friend’s death deserved to die themselves, and eventually, I blanketed anyone found guilty of murder under that idea of eye for an eye retributive justice. One day, I was researching the death penalty for a class assignment, and I came across a site advertising death row pen pals. I was flabbergasted at first then curious. I looked around some more, read about a few men and their cases, and eventually I wrote someone. My world hasn’t been the same since. It only took a couple letters for me to decide I was wrong and that things needed to change—that I wanted to help with making those changes.

And that’s one of the purposes I have for this blog. If I can help someone, somewhere see what’s really going on in our justice system, then I feel like I’m doing my part. I also need an outlet for myself. But, most of all, I want to raise awareness about one case in particular…..

picture-1011-3On New Year’s Eve of 2007, I wrote Robert Pruett, a 29 year old resident of Texas’ death row. We’ve been steady writers ever since. I’ve visited, looked into his case, and I’ve come to believe that he was wrongly convicted. It didn’t take long for me to start working on his behalf trying to get him some help, but most people just don’t care to listen. It’s sort of like being a door to door salesman…most of the doors you knock on are slammed in your face before you ever get finished talking. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to keep the state of Texas from executing Robert and to work to fight the death penalty altogether.

So, here you will find general information about death row inmates, life on the row, case statistics; you will read Robert’s story–he’ll be mailing it to me in installments; and, you’ll also be reading things from my own perspective. The truth of the matter shall be set free or so we hope.
